MINAKO REVIEW - UMI STORM
I recently had the wonderful opportunity to test and review an amazing wrap by Minako, named Umi Storm. I had signed up to be a tester during an open call, and was lucky enough to have been chosen for a mystery wrap that was taking a journey across America. Needless to say, when I found out it was the lovely Umi Storm that would be visiting, I was beyond ecstatic! It was a wrap that had already caught my eye in the chatter group, based on the design and blend I had previewed.
When Umi Storm arrived to me, I was delightfully surprised with the tweedy grey – a flecked color I have certainly come to expect when I think of Tsumugi silks. It’s one of my favorite fibers because of this speckled coloring, and of course the marvelous nubby texture, so aesthetically Umi Storm did not let me down! The actual design of the wrap reminded me of animal stripes blended with feathers, or even a leafy pattern – almost giving it an organic feeling overall. I felt very stylish and chic, but not too flashy wearing this pattern. The grey and natural white combination really complimented the design, and made it stand out beautifully.
Having experienced Tsumugi silk wraps previously, I am slightly familiar with the attributes of the blend, therefore had a small basis to compare Umi Storm to. In hand, the wrap was pretty heavy – more than I expected at least! Just by touch, I knew it was going to be toddler-worthy because of the weight and composition alone. Once I unfolded and started playing, it felt thinner than I had imagined, and wrapping with it turned out to be quite enjoyable. Umi Storm had a great amount of grip to keep my passes in place, felt solid with my 23 pound toddler, was rather cushy on my shoulders, and although beastly in nature, it had plenty of stretch to make it perfectly moldable. I was delighted to find that Umi Storm practically pleated itself (I love when that happens!), and effortlessly held half-knot and knotless finishes. My toddler felt weightless on my back because of the structure and support Umi Storm provided, and not once did I get achy or tired carrying him around, even during a long evening walk with my family.
In addition to these dreamy characteristics, the combination of weight, thickness, and texture enable Umi Storm to really shine with older babies in my opinion. Tsumugi silk blends usually start off feeling a little dense, but always soften up beautifully over time - once broken in it really is the perfect wrap! There certainly is no right or wrong side to Umi storm, and both sides have that distinguishing texture and color which makes wrapping with it absolutely fantastic.
Overall, Umi Storm really impressed me. The wonderful wrapping qualities combined with that delicious texture and tweedy grey color I adore totally made me fall in love. I honestly did not know what to expect from this up and coming wrap brand, Minako, but they have definitely created a fabulous wrap, and this experience has only made me want to try more beautiful Minako designs.
